The Bishop David A. Zubik: Church Alive! Scholarship has been established to help students in diocesan Catholic high schools who are excited about their faith to display it in exemplary ways.
It is a tribute to how Bishop Zubik’s faith-filled witness, servant leadership, and deep love for Catholic education has touched countless lives. As a teacher, administrator and shepherd, he has helped to light the way for generations, igniting hearts with the joy of the Gospel and inspiring all with the belief that “Nothing is Impossible with God.”
The scholarship is established and founded through the generous gifts of clergy and the faithful.
Bishop-designate Mark Eckman surprised Bishop Zubik with the announcement of the scholarship at the conclusion of a Mass of Thanksgiving that Bishop Zubik celebrated at Saint Paul Cathedral on July 10. Bishop Eckman presented Bishop Zubik with a commemorative announcement of the scholarship.
Crowds filled the cathedral for the Mass, which Bishop Zubik planned as an opportunity to thank the faithful for his tenure as 12th Bishop of Pittsburgh. Through the course of the Mass, they offered him several standing ovations for his service.
Well-wishes and congratulations continue to pour in for Bishop Zubik, especially through diocesan social media channels.
Pope Leo accepted Bishop Zubik’s resignation on June 4, 2025, and appointed Bishop Mark Eckman as the 13th Bishop of Pittsburgh. Bishop Eckman will be installed in a special Mass on July 14, 2025.
