PITTSBURGH, PA — Bishop David Zubik has appointed Jonathan M. (Jon) Cuniak as the next Regional Superintendent for South Regional Catholic Elementary Schools, Inc., effective July 1, 2025. Mr. Cuniak currently serves as Regional Superintendent for the East Region and brings 25 years of experience in Catholic education and leadership.
“Our Catholic schools are communities of faith and academic excellence, and Jon has proven himself to be a leader who nurtures both,” said Bishop Zubik. “I’m confident he will bring wisdom, creativity, and compassion to his new role.”
Mr. Cuniak’s appointment was formally recommended and unanimously approved by the South Regional Catholic Elementary Schools, Inc. Board of Directors. As Regional Superintendent, he will serve as the chief administrative officer for the region’s school programs, responsible for the administration of the total educational program and the day-to-day operation and management of the schools. He will report to the regional board and be supervised by the Superintendent of Catholic Schools.
“It is a privilege to return to the South Hills where I began my career and where Catholic schools have had a lasting impact on my life,” said Mr. Cuniak. “This new role is an opportunity to support our principals, empower our teachers, and guide our students to experience the fullness of a Christ-centered education.”
Mr. Cuniak began his career teaching at Saint Joan of Arc School in South Park and later served as principal there. He went on to serve as principal at Saint Pius X School in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and at Saint Therese of Lisieux School in Munhall, where he led the transition to a regional school and guided the community through the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2022, he has served as Regional Superintendent for Pittsburgh East Regional Catholic Elementary Schools, Inc., where he led regional accreditation and academic improvement initiatives across seven schools.
Mr. Cuniak holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees and administrative certification from Duquesne University. He also serves as a team chair for the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, leading school and system accreditation visits across the region.
