On Monday, April 28, Bishop Mark Seitz of the Diocese of El Paso visited the Diocese of Pittsburgh, addressing a packed auditorium at the Diocesan Pastoral Center.
Clergy and laity alike came, eager to hear him speak on the dignity of people and welcome for migrants.
Bishop Seitz spoke about how Scripture calls us to welcome the stranger, noting that commands to “welcome the stranger” appear in the Bible even more frequently than the injunction to “love your neighbor.”
Bishop Seitz’s talk aimed to clarify the Church’s teaching on immigration in light of our understanding of Resurrection, alongside a reflection on Pope Francis’s legacy.
Bishop Seitz reminded the crowd of the four steps Pope Francis encouraged when encountering immigrants in our midst: “Welcome. Protect. Promote. Integrate.”
He concluded with the words of Saint John of the Cross: “In the evening of life, you will be judged on love alone.”
