To thank the faithful for his tenure as the 12th Bishop of Pittsburgh, Bishop David Zubik will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at Saint Paul Cathedral at 7 p.m. on July 10. All are welcome. Bishop Mark Eckman will succeed him as the 13th Bishop of Pittsburgh on July 14.

The Diocese of Pittsburgh is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Brian D. Fernandes as President of Bishop Canevin High School, effective July 1, 2025. This appointment comes with the full support of the Catholic High Schools of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, Inc. Board of Directors and the Bishop Canevin High School Board of Directors.

Bishop David A. Zubik, Diocese of Pittsburgh, will ordain two men to the priesthood during a Mass of Ordination on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Saint Paul Cathedral in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood (Fifth Avenue at N. Craig Street, Pittsburgh 15213).

I was saddened to learn of the death of Bishop Lawrence Brandt, Bishop Emeritus of Greensburg. His many years of service leave a legacy marked by fidelity, intelligence, and strength.

The Holy See announced today at 6:00 a.m. local time that Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of Bishop David A. Zubik, who reached the mandatory retirement age of 75 this past September. At the same time, the Holy Father has appointed Auxiliary Bishop Mark A. Eckman as the 13th Bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

Bishop David Zubik has appointed Jonathan M. (Jon) Cuniak as the next Regional Superintendent for South Regional Catholic Elementary Schools, Inc., effective July 1, 2025. Mr. Cuniak currently serves as Regional Superintendent for the East Region and brings 25 years of experience in Catholic education and leadership.

Bishop David Zubik is calling for interested and qualified Catholic men to apply for a new formation class to serve the Church as permanent deacons.

Bishop David Zubik has appointed Erin Rice as Regional Superintendent for the North Hills Regional Catholic Elementary Schools, Inc. effective July 1, 2025. Rice brings 20 years of experience in school administration and teaching to her new role.

The Faithful of the Diocese of Pittsburgh join Catholics and many others around the world in prayerful celebration following the announcement of the election of Pope Leo XIV as the 266th successor of Saint Peter.

As the Church worldwide continues to mourn Pope Francis’ passing, cardinals of the Catholic Church are gathered in Rome in preparation for the conclave to elect a new Pope. The conclave begins on May 7.

We should all be shocked at the reported act of arson at the residence of Governor Josh Shapiro and his family. Particularly during this Holy Week for Christians and Passover time for the Jewish people, we focus on the deep love that God has for all of us.

As devastating fires ravage homes, churches, and entire communities across Southern California, I urge everyone to join in prayer for an end to these destructive blazes. Let us lift up those who have been harmed, offering them not only our prayers but also our tangible support and compassion.
