In this very young new year, violence has already had a sobering impact on our hopes for greater peace in 2023. The tragic death of Brackenridge Police Chief Justin McIntyre and the wounding of his fellow officer remind us of the dedication of law enforcement who put their lives on the line to provide for our safety.

Pope Benedict taught us much during his papacy, but the most enduring lessons may be of humility and fraternity. His historic decision to resign when he could no longer fulfill his duties to the best of his ability demonstrates his love for our Lord and our Church. The way that he has lived quietly, in a brotherly friendship with his successor, Pope Francis, is a model for all Catholics to follow as we continue to journey together in service to Jesus and His Church.

Bishop David Zubik has appointed leaders for two Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, re-titling two current administrators at St. Joseph High School in Natrona Heights as principal and president, while promoting a staff member at Oakland Catholic High School to the position of principal.

Those of us who have worked and prayed to protect unborn children are profoundly grateful that the Supreme Court of the United States has determined that there is not a constitutional right for abortion. Three groupings of parishes in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh will merge on July 1, 2022, to create three new parishes, Bishop David Zubik announced today. Ten parishes will be part of the mergers.

Bishop David Zubik has appointed Jonathan Cuniak as Regional Administrator for the Pittsburgh-East Regional Catholic Elementary Schools (PERCES), Inc. Cuniak has served as interim administrator since October 2021.  The appointment is effective May 2, 2022.
