Two schools to close, four others will merge

In response to increasing acts of anti-Semitism in the United States and abroad, Bishop David Zubik is offering his support and voice to #JewishandProud Day on Monday, January 6, 2020. as a #JewishandProudAlly.

Bishop David Zubik’s pastoral letter, The Church Healing, dated March 6, 2019, stated that an update regarding the amount disbursed through the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Fund, without identifying the recipients, would be released by January 1, 2020.

On December 16, 2019 an unredacted portion of Richard M. Lelonis’ Grand Jury Report was released.

Eight groupings of parishes in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh will merge on January 6, 2020, to create eight new parishes, Bishop David Zubik announced today. Twenty-six parishes will be part of the mergers.

On December 6, 2019, Bishop David Zubik signed a decree indicating that St. Peter church building of Prince of Peace Parish in the South Side of Pittsburgh, is being closed for worship and relegated to profane but not sordid use.  This means that all sacred objects will be removed from the church. The building may then be sold or rented and the parish will ensure that its future use would respect the dignity of the building as a prior place of worship. 

Bishop David A. Zubik is the principal celebrant for the annual Mass for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the evening of Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Saint Paul Cathedral, Oakland.  

Continuing a long tradition, Bishop David A. Zubik has asked all parishes in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh to be open for the Sacrament of Confession on Wednesday December 11, from 6-9 p.m. for the diocese’s twice-yearly “The Light is On for You” campaign, when Catholics are invited to return to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The Christian Leaders Fellowship, an ecumenical group of local bishops and denominational executives, will lead a prayer service at the annual dedication of the Pittsburgh Crèche, on Friday, November 22 at noon in the plaza in front of US Steel Tower on Grant Street, Downtown.

It has also been a time for the heart of the Church to deepen its understanding of what victims/survivors have endured, and to reach out in news ways to help them heal spiritually.

Over and over and over, we grieve as a nation for the victims of mass shootings, praying for the souls of those who have died and for the long recovery of those with wounded bodies and broken hearts. Our prayers must also lead us to actions that will address the complex causes of these crimes.

In light of the rapidly declining enrollment and in response to a request from Father Steve Kresak, administrator of the grouping in which Saint Sylvester Parish and School are located, Bishop David Zubik has announced that Saint Sylvester School in Brentwood will not reopen for the 2019-2020 school year. Arrangements are in place to help its 57 students attend a neighboring Catholic school.

On May 18, Bishop David Zubik confirmed the first five parish mergers to result from the ongoing On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, and recognized five church buildings in the Diocese of Pittsburgh as shrines.
